Akragas, Agrigentum, Girgenti are its ancient names. Today Agrigento is a reality in the balance between past and present, between tradition and innovation. Founded in 581 BC by the same Greek colonists who founded Gela, Agrigento enjoyed its greatest splendor under the tyranny of Terone. Followed one another the Roman domination, the Arab invasion, the bad government of the Borboni and Spanish culminated with the construction of the jetties of Porto Empedocles using the remains of the Temple of Jupiter. The city is located in a panoramic position, dominating the Valley of the Temples and the sea. It 's a major tourist center due to its unique archaeological heritage. Do not miss:

• The Valley of the Temples and the Archaeological Museum of St. Nicholas, the Hellenistic Roman Quarter, the Cathedral, the Sanctuary of Demeter and Persephone, the church of San Biagio, the church of St. Nicholas;
• The birthplace of Nobel Prize winner Luigi Pirandello and the theatrical event of the Pirandello’s week;
• the white cliffs of Scala dei Turchi, Punta Bianca and the nature reserve of Torre Salsa;
• In February, the festival of the almond tree in bloom, the International Folk Festival;
• In July, the great festival of San Calogero, the most beloved saint of Agrigento
